The best engagement photo locations in the Bay Area are honestly hard to narrow down — and that’s a good problem to have. You’ve got dramatic coastline, golden rolling hills, redwood forests, vineyard landscapes, and San Francisco, all within an hour or two of each other.

I get the question all the time from newly engaged couples: where should we do our photos? So I’ve broken down my favorite spots by vibe, so you can find the one that actually feels like you.

1. Baker Beach — Iconic San Francisco Views

If you want the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, Baker Beach is your spot.* It’s stunning, dramatic, and unmistakably San Francisco. The soft sand, crashing waves, and bridge silhouette make for images that feel cinematic and timeless.

Best time to shoot: Golden hour (about an hour before sunset). The light hits the bridge and bounces off the water in a way that’s genuinely magical

Vibe: Dramatic, iconic, romantic.

Heads up: It can be foggy. That’s not always a bad thing — fog creates a moody, ethereal look — but if you want blue skies, aim for late spring or fall.

*Baker Beach is iconic for a reason — that Golden Gate backdrop is hard to beat. But it gets crowded fast, especially on weekends. I recommend arriving before 8am on a weekday if you want it relatively to yourselves. Prefer something less touristy? The Marin Headlands give you similar drama with a fraction of the foot traffic.

2. The Marin Headlands — Epic Coastal Drama

Just across the bridge, the Marin Headlands offer sweeping views of the bay, the city skyline, and miles of open coastline. It’s wild and wide-open in a way that feels almost cinematic.

This is one of my personal favorites for couples who want big, landscape-forward images with room to breathe.

Best time to shoot: Sunset or early morning for softer light and fewer crowds.

Vibe: Adventurous, wide-open, dramatic.

3. Point Reyes National Seashore — Untouched and Beautiful

Point Reyes is about an hour north of San Francisco, and it feels like another world entirely. Rugged cliffs, wildflowers, rolling grasslands, and deserted beaches. If you want something that doesn’t look like every other engagement session you’ve seen, this is it.

It’s a longer drive, but absolutely worth it for couples who love the outdoors and want something a little more off the beaten path.

Best time to shoot: Late afternoon into golden hour.

Vibe: Romantic, wild, editorial.

4. Muir Beach & Muir Woods — Lush and Intimate

If you love the idea of towering redwoods and dappled light filtering through the trees, Muir Woods and the surrounding area are dreamy. Muir Beach offers a quieter, more intimate coastal feel than Baker Beach — less iconic, but deeply beautiful.

Best time to shoot: Midday actually works well in the woods because the canopy diffuses the light. Beach shots are best at golden hour.

Vibe: Intimate, lush, nature-forward.

5. Napa Valley — Golden Vineyards and Wine Country Magic

Napa is about an hour and a half from San Francisco, and it is absolutely worth the drive for engagement photos. Rolling vineyard rows, golden hills, and the warm, soft light of wine country make for some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever taken.

Fall is peak season when the vines turn gold and red, but honestly, Napa looks incredible year-round. Many vineyards require a permit or fee for photo shoots, so plan ahead — I can help with this.

Best time to shoot: Late afternoon into golden hour, especially in September through November for fall color.

Vibe: Romantic, luxurious, warm and golden.

6. Rodeo Beach — Moody, Dramatic, and Completely Unique

Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands is unlike any other beach in the Bay Area. The dark sand, multi-colored stones, crashing waves, and surrounding hills make for images that feel raw, cinematic, and completely one-of-a-kind. It’s dramatic without being over the top, and it photographs unlike anywhere else.

Best time to shoot: Overcast days are actually ideal here — the soft, even light complements the moody landscape perfectly. Golden hour is stunning too.

Vibe: Moody, dramatic, editorial.

7. The Presidio — Golden Gate Views Without the Crowds

The Presidio offers multiple spots with Golden Gate Bridge views, beautiful eucalyptus groves, and open meadows — with far fewer people than Baker Beach. It’s a great alternative if you want the iconic bridge backdrop in a slightly more relaxed setting.

Best time to shoot: Early morning or golden hour.

Vibe: Soft, classic, romantic.

8. Half Moon Bay — Coastal Magic South of the City

Half Moon Bay sits about 30 miles south of San Francisco and has a completely different energy — quieter, more spacious, and incredibly photogenic. The bluffs overlooking the Pacific, the wide open beaches, and the rolling coastal farmland give you a lot of variety in one location. It’s perfect for couples who want that wide, open coastal feel without the crowds.

Best time to shoot: Golden hour, especially in late summer and fall when the light is warm and the fog tends to clear.

Vibe: Open, romantic, coastal.

How to Choose

Here’s my honest advice: pick a location that feels like you, not just one that photographs well. The best engagement sessions happen when couples are relaxed and in their element. If you’re not outdoorsy, don’t force a two-hour hike. If you love wine, Napa might feel more natural than a windswept beach.

Think about:

• What kind of light and colors do you love? (Warm and golden = Napa or golden hour beach; moody and dramatic = Marin or Rodeo Beach)
• How far are you willing to travel?
• Do you want the city in the frame, or do you prefer something more natural?
