It’s one of the first questions couples ask when they start planning: how much does a wedding photographer cost?

And the honest answer is: it depends — but if you’re getting married in the Bay Area, you should know what “normal” actually looks like here before you start budgeting.

Let’s Talk Real Numbers

You’ll see articles online suggesting you can hire a wedding photographer for $2,000–$3,000. In the Bay Area, that is not realistic. Not for someone experienced, professional, and capable of delivering the images you’ll be looking at for the rest of your life.

The average starting price for a qualified Bay Area wedding photographer is around $7,000 for a base package. From there, pricing ranges widely — from $7,000 on the lower end to $65,000+ for top-tier, high-demand photographers with years of experience and a distinct editorial style.

That’s a big range. Here’s what drives it:

• Experience and years in the industry — a photographer who has shot 200 weddings brings something very different than someone in their second year.
• Style and artistic vision — photographers with a clear, developed aesthetic command higher rates.
• What’s included — hours of coverage, second shooters, albums, prints, turnaround time, and how much hands-on support you get before and after the wedding.
• Demand — the best photographers book out 12–18 months in advance because they can.

Photography Should Be a Priority in Your Budget

Here’s something I say to every couple I talk to: photography is the one wedding investment that lasts forever.

The flowers are gone by Sunday. The food is eaten. The dress goes into a box. But your photos — and the feeling of looking back at your wedding day — that stays with you for the rest of your life.

Most wedding planners suggest allocating 10–15% of your total wedding budget to photography. In the Bay Area, where weddings often run $50,000–$150,000+, that math lands you right in the range we talked about.

If photography matters to you — and I’d argue it should — build your budget around it, not the other way around. It’s much easier to cut back on florals or a signature cocktail than to wish you had better photos.

A Note on Online Pricing Guides

You’ve probably landed on articles from The Knot or similar sites suggesting national averages of $2,000–$3,000. Ignore them — that data is outdated and doesn’t reflect what it actually costs to live and work in the Bay Area. Our cost of living is among the highest in the country, and photographer pricing reflects that. Comparing Bay Area rates to a national average is like comparing Bay Area rent to rent in rural Ohio. It’s a different market entirely.

Yes, You Can Find Someone Cheaper — But.

I say this not to be harsh but because I’ve seen it play out: you will get what you pay for.

Here’s something most people don’t think about: photography is not just the hours you see on your wedding day. Behind every wedding, a photographer puts in 40–60+ hours of total work — pre-wedding consultations, travel, the full day of shooting, culling through thousands of images, color grading and editing every photo, exporting, delivering, and following up. A photographer charging $2,000 for all of that is making well below minimum wage for their time. That’s not sustainable, and it often shows in the quality and care of the final product.

A photographer charging $1,500–$2,500 in the Bay Area is likely early in their career, still developing their technical skills, or shooting weddings as a side job. That doesn’t mean they’re bad — but it does mean you’re taking on more risk on one of the most important days of your life.

Questions to ask any photographer at any price point:

• How many weddings have you shot?
• Can I see a full gallery from a recent wedding (not just highlight images)?
• What happens if you have an emergency the day of?
• What does your editing process look like and how long is turnaround?

The answers will tell you a lot.

What You’re Actually Getting When You Hire the Right Person

Beyond the photos themselves, the right photographer changes the experience of your wedding day.

That’s what separates an investment in photography from just hiring someone with a camera.

So What Should You Budget?

Here’s a simple framework:

• $7,000–$10,000 — Experienced, professional Bay Area photographer. Solid portfolio, full gallery deliveries, reliable.
• $10,000–$20,000 — Highly experienced, distinct style, strong demand. Likely books 12+ months out.
• $20,000+ — Top-tier editorial photographers, destination specialists, or photographers with significant press and publication history.

If your budget is under $7,000, it’s worth having an honest conversation with photographers you love — sometimes there’s flexibility for off-season dates, shorter coverage hours, or weekday weddings.
