Half Moon Bay Engagement | Hanna + Matt

Couple running on Half Moon Bay beach cliffs, Bay Area engagement photographer Rose Freedman

Some sessions start with nervous energy… This Half Moon Bay engagement session was not one of them — that “wait, what do I do with my hands?” feeling — and some sessions start with people already running down the beach before I’ve even gotten my camera out.

Hanna and Matt were the second kind.

We spent an overcast afternoon on the beach at Half Moon Bay, and honestly? The weather was perfect. Soft, even light, dramatic cliffs, the sound of waves — moody in the best possible way. And Hanna and Matt brought the sunshine themselves.

The Kind of Couple Who Doesn’t Need Direction

There’s a certain type of client I love photographing: the ones who are just themselves in front of the camera. No stiffness, no “are we doing this right?” — just two people who are genuinely happy to be there together.

Hanna and Matt are that couple. Silly, warm, full of joy. Within minutes they were running down the cliffs, laughing at nothing in particular, and giving me the kind of images that you can’t plan or pose. The ones where you can feel the energy straight through the screen.

Matt is a scientist, which I love — we immediately bonded over my biology background. There’s something fitting about a scientist and a photographer both ending up on a foggy beach, paying close attention to the world around them.

A Chapter Worth Celebrating

Hanna and Matt are in the middle of a big season of life. They’re getting married in the Redwoods this August — intimate, lush, and completely them — and soon after, they’re making a big move to Portugal.

That kind of context makes a session feel different. Their people — family and friends — are everything to them, especially right now. And there’s something about knowing you’re about to cross an ocean that makes you want to hold onto moments a little tighter.

These photos will matter. Not just as engagement portraits, but as a record of this exact chapter — young, in love, full of possibility, running barefoot on a California beach before everything changes.

I can’t wait to photograph their wedding.

Hanna and Matt will be getting married in the Redwoods in August 2026. Rose Freedman Photography is a Bay Area wedding and engagement photographer serving couples throughout San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Napa Valley, Marin, and California. Inquire here.

"Rose is a delight to work with! She had a variety of location options for us to choose from and helped my husband and I feel comfortable during our session. Us feeling natural led to beautiful, natural photos. We have worked with Rose on multiple sessions and will continue to in the future!"
