Choose a Location That Means Something

The Bay Area is one of the most location-rich places in the country to get engaged photos taken, which is honestly both a gift and a trap. Too many options, and couples default to “somewhere pretty.” But the sessions that turn out the most beautiful are almost never the ones at the most Instagrammed spot — they’re the ones at a place that actually means something to you.

That said, here’s what I know from shooting across the region:

For dramatic scenery: The Marin Headlands give you clifftop views, golden hills, and the Golden Gate in the background — without the crowds of Baker Beach. Permits are not required for couples (no commercial shoot permits needed for personal sessions under a certain size), but arrive early. Rodeo Beach nearby is stunning for moody, overcast sessions.

For a San Francisco backdrop: Lands End and Sutro Baths offer wild coastline with the city just behind you. Alamo Square is iconic for a reason — the Painted Ladies with downtown behind them photograph beautifully at golden hour. Crissy Field gives you the bridge AND the bay in one frame.

For something lush and green: Tilden Regional Park in the Berkeley Hills is underrated and gorgeous, especially in spring. Muir Woods is breathtaking but requires advance parking reservations — plan ahead.

For wine country vibes: Napa and Sonoma vineyards are absolutely stunning in late summer and fall harvest season. Many private vineyards require a shoot permit or a bottle purchase — I can help navigate this.

Time It Right (This Is More Important Than You Think)

Golden hour in the Bay Area is different from golden hour anywhere else, and I mean that in the best way. The marine layer burns off by late afternoon most days, leaving that soft, diffused light before the sun hits the horizon — it’s genuinely magic for photos.

Here’s what actually matters for timing:

Golden hour is your best friend. That’s roughly 1–2 hours before sunset. In summer (June–August), that puts you shooting from about 7–8pm. In winter, we’re looking at 4–5pm. I always send couples a location-specific golden hour time before our session.

Watch the fog. Classic San Francisco fog can roll in fast, especially June through August along the coast. This isn’t always bad — diffused light on a foggy day is incredibly flattering — but if you have your heart set on a bay view, we may want to shoot further inland or plan a backup date.

Spring and fall are peak season for a reason. March through May and September through November typically offer the most consistent light, warmest temperatures, and greenest landscapes.

What to Wear

Wardrobe is one of the biggest things that will make or break how your photos look, and most couples underestimate it.

The short version: classic over trendy, solid over pattern, coordinated over matching. You want your photos to look timeless in 20 years, not obviously from 2024.

A few specific tips:

• Avoid logos and graphics entirely. They pull the eye and date the photos.
• Coordinate colors, don’t match exactly. Same color family, different shades — it looks intentional and polished.
• Bring a second outfit if you can. Even a simple outfit change adds variety and gives you more usable images.
• Layer if you’re shooting on the coast. It gets windy and cold near the water, even in summer. A jacket you can take on and off gives you options.

Just Be Yourselves — Seriously

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: the most common reason engagement photos feel stiff and posed is that couples are trying too hard to look natural instead of just being natural.

The couples who get the best photos are the ones who show up ready to laugh, goof around, and actually interact with each other — not stand still and smile at the camera. I’ll give you prompts and direction throughout the session, but I’m really just creating conditions for genuine moments to happen. My job is to capture you, not construct you.

Plan to spend 60–90 minutes with me. That’s enough time to get warmed up, work through any awkwardness, and get images across a few different spots or setups.
