I started offering Super 8 wedding video because I couldn’t stop thinking about what it does to a moment.
Still photography freezes time. Super 8 lets it move — but slowly, warmly, with a softness that makes everything look like it was always meant to be remembered. There’s a reason couples who see a Super 8 reel immediately want one. It doesn’t look like a wedding video. It looks like a feeling.
Super 8 is motion picture film — shot on a physical roll, sent to a lab, developed and scanned by hand. It’s the same format that captured home movies in the 60s and 70s, and that’s exactly why it works. The grain, the light leaks, the slightly imperfect focus — none of that is a flaw. It’s what makes it feel real.
Digital video is sharp and clean. Super 8 is alive.
Your wedding day is already one of the most emotionally charged days of your life. Super 8 matches that energy in a way that crisp HD footage sometimes doesn’t. It slows things down visually. It makes the first dance look like a scene from a film you’ve always loved. It makes your grandmother crying in the front row look like the most important thing that’s ever been captured on camera.
I’ve shot Super 8 alongside still photography at weddings, and the combination is something else entirely. You get the moments — frozen in a frame — and you get the feeling of the whole day moving.
Super 8 has been around for sixty years. The reason couples keep coming back to it isn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake — it’s because analog film captures light differently than any digital format, and that difference is visible. Warm tones. Depth. A texture that makes everything look like it mattered, because it did.
I shoot Super 8 on a roll of film during key moments of your wedding day — ceremony, portraits, reception highlights. The film goes to a lab, gets developed and scanned, and comes back as a short reel that you’ll watch over and over again.
You can see a real example below — this is from a wedding I shot here in the Bay Area.
If you’re considering adding Super 8 to your wedding photography package, get in touch and we can talk through what that looks like.
