There’s a particular kind of light that only exists in a redwood forest.
It filters down through the canopy in long, soft beams — the kind of light that makes everything feel a little more significant, a little more still. It’s the kind of light that photographs itself. And for a couple like Hanna and Matt, who brought all their own warmth and joy to the day, it was the perfect setting.
If you’ve followed along here, you might recognize these two from their Half Moon Bay engagement session — running down the beach, laughing at nothing, completely themselves in front of the camera. The wedding was exactly the same energy, just with more people, more dancing, and a little more weight to the day.
Because Hanna and Matt are leaving California. Portugal is next — a new chapter, a new country, a whole new life together. And this wedding was, in part, a way to gather everyone they love before that happens.
That context made the day feel different. Every toast felt more intentional. Every hug between old friends felt like it was being held a few seconds longer than usual. People were present in a way that doesn’t always happen at weddings, because they all knew this was a moment worth being present for.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have a quality that’s hard to describe to someone who hasn’t been there. The redwoods are massive — genuinely ancient — and standing among them puts things in perspective in a way that feels appropriate for a wedding.
The ceremony took place surrounded by trees that have been here for hundreds of years. The light came through in that particular way it only does in the forest. The sound of the creek ran underneath the vows. It was as close to a natural cathedral as you can get.
For portraits, the forest gave us everything — dappled shade, a wooden bridge over the creek, beams of light cutting through the canopy. You can’t manufacture that. You just have to show up with people who are easy to photograph, and Hanna and Matt are nothing but easy.

Hanna and Matt kept it to the people who mattered most. No filler, no obligation — just their closest friends and family, gathered in the redwoods for a day that was distinctly, completely them.
That intimacy shows up in the photos. There’s a looseness to a smaller wedding that you don’t always get with a big guest list — people are more relaxed, more present, more willing to feel the moment rather than perform it. And when a couple is as genuinely joyful as these two, that energy moves through everyone in the room.

The Santa Cruz Mountains and surrounding forests offer some of the most stunning natural wedding venues in California. If you’re drawn to something that feels grounded, lush, and completely removed from the ordinary, a redwood setting delivers that in a way no ballroom can.

"Rose is a delight to work with! She had a variety of location options for us to choose from and helped my husband and I feel comfortable during our session. Us feeling natural led to beautiful, natural photos. We have worked with Rose on multiple sessions and will continue to in the future!"
