Before Kat and Rod started planning their wedding, they did something I’ve never seen a couple do before: they wrote a mission statement.
Not a mood board. Not a Pinterest folder. A mission statement.
We want our wedding day to authentically reflect who we are as a couple. We want our ceremony and reception to showcase our shared values of community, having fun and enjoying life, mutual respect and teamwork. We want our guests to walk away with a deeper understanding of our relationship, and to create an intimate atmosphere that fosters connection. We want special time with those closest to us to thank them for being present and so they know how important they are to us. We want the planning process to be stress-free, and to be truly present in each moment.
Then — and this is the part that got me — they actually followed it.
Two MIT graduates, Kat and Rod approached their wedding the way they approach everything: with intention, clarity, and a deep belief that the details matter because the people matter. And it showed in every single moment of their day at Brownstone Gardens in Oakley, California.
The morning started quietly — Kat with her mom, a hug that said everything words couldn’t. That moment, early in the day before the veil goes on and the ceremony begins, is one I always watch for. It’s when the reality of the day lands. Kat’s mom held her face in her hands and they both just laughed and cried at the same time. I didn’t have to do anything. I just had to be there.

Brownstone Gardens has one of the most beautiful ceremony spaces in the East Bay. The white columned gazebo draped in cascading greenery, votives lining the steps, mature trees filtering the afternoon light — it’s a setting that does a lot of the work for you. But Kat and Rod brought something the venue couldn’t provide: the feeling that every single person standing in that circle was exactly where they were supposed to be.
Rod wore a custom suit — deep burgundy, perfectly tailored — and when Kat appeared, he smiled the kind of smile you can’t rehearse. The ceremony was warm, funny, and personal. Their officiant was Rod’s brother — so of course he knew them well. Guests laughed. People cried. The mission statement — foster connection, be present — was being lived out in real time.
When they walked back down the aisle under that gazebo arch, Kat threw her bouquet arm in the air and let out a laugh that came from somewhere deep. Married. They were actually married. And you could feel it.

Brownstone Gardens gives you so much to work with for portraits- lush hedgerows, garden paths, dappled shade. Kat’s floral veil was a dream against the greenery. We shot in the full afternoon sun and the light cooperated completely.
Her bridesmaids, in mismatched mauve and sage, were as joyful as she was. There was no stiffness, no awkward posing. These were people who genuinely loved each other, and it translated directly into the images.

By the time the reception started, the energy was already electric. Globe lights hung overhead, the garden transformed into something magical after dark. Kat and Rod’s first dance was everything — she laughed the entire time, her face pressed into his shoulder, completely present.
True to their mission, they moved through the night making sure to connect with every person there. Not in a obligatory way — in a we planned this wedding so we could actually be with you way. Their guests felt it. The dance floor never emptied.
And yes — one guest in a custom emerald green suit gave the dance floor everything he had. Rod and Kat’s people are their people.

Kat and Rod also had Super 8 film shot alongside the digital photography — adding a warmth and grain to the day that feels timeless. There’s something about seeing wedding moments on film that slows everything down. It matched their aesthetic perfectly.
If you’re looking for a Brownstone Gardens wedding photographer, I want you to know: this venue photographs beautifully at every point in the day. The ceremony space, the garden grounds, the reception area under the lights at night — it’s all there. Kat and Rod’s wedding reminded me why I love shooting here. The venue provides the backdrop; the couple provides the story.
