Sean and Krystle had already done the elopement. New York City, just the two of them — the way they wanted it. But they’re Bay Area people, and their people are here, and so they came home to celebrate.

That’s exactly what a celebration wedding is for.

The Palace of Fine Arts

There are iconic San Francisco locations, and then there’s the Palace of Fine Arts. The rotunda, the lagoon, the columns that seem to belong to another century entirely — it’s one of those places that photographs like a dream regardless of what you do, and still somehow rewards the photographer who knows how to use it.

Krystle wore a white dress that let the venue do the talking, and carried a bouquet that did plenty of talking on its own: deep burgundy cymbidium orchids, white calla lilies, dark anthurium, and trailing burgundy amaranthus that cascaded almost to the ground. Dramatic, editorial, completely unforgettable.

The Celebration

This wasn’t a wedding that felt like a wedding production. It felt like a party for people who actually love each other — which is exactly what it was. The guests were there because they mattered, and it showed.

And then there was the magician.

I’ve photographed a lot of weddings. I’ve never photographed one with a magician at cocktail hour. It was exactly as delightful as it sounds — guests gathered around, genuinely surprised, completely charmed. It set the tone for a night that felt more like the best dinner party you’ve ever been to than a traditional reception.

Foreign Cinema

Dinner was at Foreign Cinema in the Mission — one of San Francisco’s most beloved restaurants, with its outdoor courtyard, projected films on the wall, and a menu that always delivers. It was the perfect way to close out a day that had been, from start to finish, distinctly and completely San Francisco.

Sean and Krystle didn’t need a big wedding to make it meaningful. They needed the right city, the right people, and a day that felt like them. They got all three.

Planning a Palace of Fine Arts Wedding?

The Palace of Fine Arts is one of San Francisco’s most stunning ceremony locations — free to use for photography, iconic, and endlessly beautiful in any light. One thing worth knowing: it’s a fully public space, and there’s no way to reserve or restrict access. Tourists, joggers, and curious passersby will be part of your day whether you plan for them or not. For some couples that’s a non-issue — they love the energy and the feeling of celebrating in the middle of the city. For others, it’s worth factoring in. If you want complete privacy for your ceremony, the Palace of Fine Arts may not be the right fit. But if you’re open to a little audience, the backdrop more than makes up for it.
